These 5-frame NUC colonies feature Certified Russian honey bee genetics, selected for resilience, resource efficiency and their well-documented resistance and tolerance to Varroa mites. 
They are an excellent option for both Treatment-Free and conventionally managed apiaries.
At Bee Mindful, our first choice is always locally adapted survivor stock when good stock is available, but when purchasing outside genetics, Certified Russian bees are our preferred choice.
They have proven to be gentle, productive and resilient in our own Treatment-Free operation and particularly well suited to the challenging forage conditions and summer dearths we experience in Texas.
 
Why Certified Russian Genetics?
Certified Russian bees originate from the USDA Russian Honey Bee breeding program and maintained breeding lines. They are different from the loosely labeled "Russian" hybrids that many beekeepers may have encountered in the past.
Russian honey bees are particularly valued for:
• Natural resistance and tolerance to Varroa mites
• Hygienic and grooming behaviors
• Brood cycles that respond closely to available forage
• Efficient use of stored resources during dearths
• Strong overwintering ability
• Good productivity and colony resilience
 
Their ability to reduce brood production when resources become scarce is particularly useful in Texas, where prolonged summer dearths can place significant pressure on colonies.
 
What You Receive
Each NUC includes:
• 5 drawn Langstroth frames
• An established laying Certified Russian queen
• Brood in multiple stages
• Adult bees
• Stored food appropriate to the developing colony
Unlike a package, a NUC is already functioning as a young colony with drawn comb, brood and food reserves, giving it a significant head start after installation.
 
A Note About Treatment-Free Beekeeping
Good genetics matter, but no bee purchase guarantees colony survival.
Certified Russian genetics provide traits that can support colony resilience and Varroa resistance, but long-term success also depends on local adaptation, nutrition, forage, colony management and the selective pressures operating in your own apiary.
Bee Mindful has maintained a 100% Treatment-Free operation since 2010, and Certified Russian bees are the primary outside genetics we currently introduce alongside our locally adapted survivor stock.
